About the Project

The 'Like A Buoy' Project

Alan Payne writes: Red Spider Company will in March 2007 present at Bratton Clovelly in West Devon a new community play about the life and achievements of local Victorian antiquarian, divine, novelist and folk song collector, Sabine Baring Gould. The play, "Like a Buoy", written by local author Ron Wawman after several years of research, has more than 60 parts and will be directed by Anthony Richards of the Common Players, Exeter. It will include songs, music, dance and lavish period costume. Local schools and colleges, local history and other societies will be invited to participate in all sorts of ways and will be offered special briefings and lectures. A small mobile exhibition will be offered to libraries, schools, colleges and community groups in Launceston, Tavistock, Okehampton and perhaps further afield. With the help of students, video films will be made of the performance and of the steps towards realising the project.

The idea is to increase public awareness of the life and work of Sabine Baring-Gould and his importance in the heritage of West Devon and beyond. The Heritage Lottery Fund, West Devon Borough Council and sponsors Premier Nutrition and Van Essen Hotels are generously assisting in this venture.
